Climate Change
It is now generally accepted that global warming is a reality and a number of scientific treatises indicate that the cause is man-made, particularly with regard to our ever-increasing demand for energy.
The Greenhouse Effect is a process where infrared rays from the sun penetrate the Earth's atmosphere. The atmosphere traps these rays (like the glass in a greenhouse) keeping the Earth warm. However, the demands for energy, together with industrial and car emissions, are increasing the levels of carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide and methane released into the atmosphere causing more heat to be trapped. As a result, global temperatures are predicted to rise between 1.4°C and 5.8°C by the end of this century.
Since the international recognition of global warming, and the creation of the Kyoto Protocol, attention has been drawn to alternative energy sources to reduce the consumption of carbon emitters such as coal, oil and gas. However, at the 2005 G8 Summit, reports indicated that UK emissions had actually gone up by 8%.
It has been estimated that some 20% of global warming pollution comes from residential energy use and that heating our homes and hot water is responsible for 80% of that figure. It follows that to play our part in reducing the effects of global warming and reduce our carbon footprint, we should, wherever possible be looking to eliminate unnecessary demands for energy and use that energy as efficiently as possible. We can also choose sustainable energy systems that create little or no pollution – such as the systems that we offer.
