Horizontal no problem for Gregor

Moving into a new home in Portishead at the beginning of winter and finding that the central heating system was too small for the size of house, there were problems with the pipe work, and that it was an “open” system so that when the radiator control was switched off no hot water was available through the taps, was enough to convince owner, Roy Withey, that drastic action was necessary.
Rather than trying to alter existing equipment he contacted British Gas for a quotation to install a complete new system based on a Worcester Bosch condensing boiler. However, with the possibility of rising fuel prices and shortage of supply, he also undertook research into solar water heating. Encouraged by what he learnt, and as his new house has a southerly aspect, he added a solar water heating system to the specification.
As it turned out, however, there was a problem. British Gas let it be known that, rather than mount the solar panels horizontally across the roof, as Mr Withey wished, they would only mount them vertically. As the reason for a horizontal installation was to blend the panels in with the roof shape, and Mr Withey was insistent on this, British Gas then recommended Gregor Heating and Renewable Energy to carry out the solar part of the project.
The system has now been operational since July and Mr Withey is very happy with the results so far. Furthermore, with a new 300–litre tank he is finding that there is plenty of domestic hot water available. He said “Although having two contractors on a single project is not the best way of doing things, Gregor came onto the project and were able to install the panels quickly and without fuss.” He added: “The initial consultation with them was informative and I was assured that mounting the panels horizontally would have no detrimental effect on performance. At no time did I feel pressurised or sold to and I was very pleased with their professional approach”.
