New-build scheme incorporates solar

Five, 3-bedroom houses at Bilbie Close, Horfield, Bristol.

A recently completed Bristol Community Housing new-build scheme has confirmed recognition of the need to move towards renewable green energy in new housing developments.

An important part of the brief to developer, Knightstone Housing, was for each of the five, 3-bedroom properties to have a solar water heating system linked to a high-energy rated boiler. Responding to this, builders Halsall Construction Ltd together with renewable energy specialist, Gregor Heating and Renewable Energy, designed a standard scheme consisting of Worcester Bosch condensing boilers and roof-mounted solar panels. These will provide some 60% of the annual hot water requirement for an average home with conventional heating providing the remaining energy.

Bob Collins, Contracts Manager, of Halsall Construction Ltd is delighted with the Horfield project that, despite a difficult site location with poor access, was completed on time and on budget. The scheme has easily achieved Eco Homes Very Good rating. He commented "The Halsall/Gregor partnership worked well with the solar and central heating installations smoothly and efficiently installed. Each householder has been supplied with a simply written guide explaining how to get the best out of the system and, as Gregor will be providing an ongoing maintenance service, further advice will be available if required".

Gregor Heating is pioneering renewable energy in Bristol and the south west and in addition to domestic solar installations can offer hot water and central heating systems that derive heat from both the ground and in ambient air. An Energy Centre at its Warmley base contains live systems where anyone interested in renewable energy can see them working and obtain further information.
