This National Apprenticeship Week, we’re proud to celebrate our apprentices and the people who support them every step of the way. One of those people is Ross Baker, our new Apprenticeship Mentor.

Supporting Apprentices Where It Matters Most

Ross joined Gregor in his new role on 1st December 2025, bringing with him over 15 years’ experience as an on-site engineer. Having spent many years working directly on projects, Ross understands the realities of life on site, and the challenges apprentices can face while learning the trade.

Gregor recognised the need for a dedicated middle point between busy engineers, the college and apprentices who sometimes need extra guidance, time or reassurance. That’s where Ross comes in.

“Sometimes apprentices need help and guidance, and engineers are busy on the job. My role is to guide them, give them extra training and support when they need it.”

Ross’s week is varied, he rotates around sites and apprentices can book time with him for one-to-one support, whether that’s preparing for an upcoming assessment, building confidence, or getting extra help with technical skills.

A Role Built on Experience, and Care

After stepping away from Gregor to pursue a career as a personal trainer, Ross was asked to return in this newly created role – which blended his experience as an engineer and a coach. The opportunity to work closely with apprentices and help shape their development was something that really appealed to him.

“It sounded rewarding — being able to work alongside apprentices and see them grow.”

That reward is evident in the variety of work Ross supports across Gregor’s apprenticeship programme.

Gregor currently has 15 apprentices spread across all four years of training, working mainly on site across new build projects, with some gaining experience in domestic settings and alongside engineers.

Ross’s role adapts to where each apprentice is in their journey.

“With first years, it might be helping them with measurements or cutting pipes for radiators. With fourth years, it’s preparing them for their gas assessments — commissioning, tightness testing, making sure they’re where they need to be before assessment.”

Blending College Learning with Real-World Experience

Gregor apprentices attend On Site College in Bristol one day a week, where their learning is supported by structured training and dedicated training officers. The rest of the week, they’re out on live jobs, always paired with an experienced engineer.

Ross works closely with both the apprentices and the college framework.

“The work we focus on is led by their college portfolio and what they need to complete, but Gregor also has its own expectations of what apprentices should achieve by the end of each year.”

Ross recently visited the On-Site College to better understand the apprentices’ learning environment and align on-site training with what’s being taught in the classroom.

Building Confidence, Community and Belonging

Technical skills are only part of the picture. Confidence and support play a huge role in an apprentice’s success.

Ross has created a WhatsApp group where apprentices can share photos of their work, ask questions, encourage each other and celebrate progress. It’s helped build a strong sense of community across the group.

Every quarter, Gregor also recognises outstanding effort by awarding an Apprentice of the Quarter, who receives £200 towards tools.

“It makes them feel part of the company. We bring everyone together for a training day, cover compliance, and then announce the winner.”

Even once apprentices qualify, Gregor doesn’t stop supporting them.

“Most stay on after the four years and go out onto site, but we still keep an eye on them.”

Watching Confidence Grow

For Ross, the most rewarding part of the role is seeing apprentices grow in confidence.

“A lot of it comes down to confidence. They know more than they think they know.”

“To know I’m a small part in helping them grow through their apprenticeship means a lot. I often receive messages thanking me for the support I gave, which always makes my day”.

We at Gregor take this subject very seriously – we feel now more than ever, it’s crucial to talk about mental health. Our mental well-being is just as important as our physical health, yet it’s still often overlooked or dismissed.

This week serves as a reminder that it’s okay not to be okay and that seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness. Whether you’re struggling with stress, anxiety, depression, or any other mental health challenge, know that you’re not alone.

Taking care of our mental health isn’t just about addressing issues when they arise; it’s also about building resilience and building healthy habits that support our well-being every day.

The theme of this year’s week is ‘movement’, and we have just the person to talk about this.

Shaun has been our contracts manager for 13 years, he loves exercise and a challenge and has been running half marathons and taking part in triathlons for many years. In just five weeks, on 16^th June he’s taking part in his first Iron Man event which he’s been training for the last 18 months.

Here’s what Shaun has to say about mental health and movement.

“Doing exercise helps with stress, mental health, everything. Whether it’s running, swimming or cycling. I’ve always done exercise – but when my kids were young I didn’t do it as often. Then I found the stress of work and parenting etc crept up on me so I got back into it again. Even when I am not training for an event I exercise – for me it’s like maintenance and a release. It’s something I do for myself, and I try to encourage everyone to do it, especially my work colleagues and kids.

Leading up to this event I do about eight training sessions a week, sometimes twice a day and I always make sure I have rest days. I love a challenge and the Iron Man is something I always wanted to do. If I can do this – I feel as though I can do anything!”

We asked Shaun the one thing he would tell anyone if they were thinking of introducing more exercise into their lives:

“Find like-minded people – don’t do it by yourself because it’s not as much fun. When you are there with people there is consistency, they encourage you, and you have accountability. If you say you’ll meet someone at 7am for a run – you have to be there and they will be there too.”

How Gregor promotes more movement during the workday

Prioritizing mental health isn’t just crucial in the workplace, but it significantly impacts overall well-being. This year, the focus on movement deeply resonated with us at Gregor, both personally and professionally. Many of our team members engage in various sports activities outside of work, whether it’s football, tennis, or hitting the gym. We frequently hear them echoing Shaun’s sentiments about the benefits of staying active.

To further  promote movement during the workday, not only do we have the cycle to work scheme in place, we also introduced a table tennis setup in the office, which has been a tremendous success during lunch breaks not just for movement but for the social aspect it brings as well. Beyond our workplace, we believe in supporting the community’s access to recreational activities. Over the years, we’ve actively contributed to local sports and community clubs and will continue to promote exercise, movement and good mental health. Gregor Heating has been training apprentices for over 30 years. In fact, one of our first apprentices, Craig, is still with us and is now Director of Operations.

Winter can pose challenges for home owners, especially if you live in a property with exposed condense pipes and outside taps.

Here are some helpful tips from our engineers to help prevent and address issues related to frozen condense pipes and taps:

1. Know where your mains stop tap is, so that you can block off water supply quickly in an emergency (typically under the kitchen sink).
2. Regularly Check Outside Taps: Ensure that outside taps are turned off internally (generally under the kitchen sink) properly and drain any excess water from the outside tap. Disconnect and store garden hoses indoors during winter to prevent them from freezing and causing damage.
3. Use Tap Covers: Invest in tap covers or wraps to insulate outside taps. These covers provide a protective barrier against the cold and can help prevent freezing. They are inexpensive and easy to install.
4. Insulate Exposed Pipes: Ensure that any exposed pipes are properly insulated, pay particular attention to any pipes in lofts or that run outside your property. This can prevent them from freezing during cold spells.
5. Keep the Heating On: Maintaining a consistent low indoor temperature, even when you’re away, can help prevent freezing issues. Keeping the heating system on a low setting can keep the entire property warm, including the pipes.
6. Install Heat Tracing Cable: In areas prone to extreme cold, installing heat tracing cable along the condense pipes can help keep them warm. This cable provides a controlled amount of heat to prevent freezing, offering an extra layer of protection.
7. Seal Gaps and Cracks: Inspect the exterior of your property for any gaps or cracks that might expose pipes to the cold. Seal these gaps with weatherproofing materials to prevent cold air from reaching the pipes.
8. Clear your gutters and drains to prevent blockages, and check for leaks.
9. Check any water storage tank and pipework in roof space are fully insulated.
10. Seek Professional Advice: If you encounter persistent issues with frozen pipes or taps, consider seeking advice from a professional plumber or heating engineer such as ourselves.

By taking proactive measures and following these tips, you can minimize the risk of frozen condense pipes and outside taps in your home during the winter months.

Earlier this year, the charity achieved its ambitious vision of moving to a larger space at Spring Street, Bedminster and providing 12 containers that have been converted into self-contained studio flats and provide temporary accommodation until a service user can find a more permanent home. As well as the bus that is already being used by up to 12 people a night.

Our renewables team was pleased to continue to support the project in fitting the heating in the form of Mitsubishi air-to-air units,  providing one external fan unit and two indoor wall units, for all 12 of the living blocks.

As we head into the coldest time of year, it’s great to see that they are now all up and running, with individual showers, ready to be occupied giving vulnerable people the opportunity to have warm and cosy bed for the night.

This year we are are exhibiting at not one, not two but three different events in Bristol and South Glos. Each provides a perfect opportunity for you to come along and have a chat to the team.

Our giant deckchair has also had a dusting down and will be on show. It proves to be a hit wherever we go!

Bradley Stoke Festival – 9th + 10th June

We’ll be kicking things off at the Bradley Stoke Festival on Saturday 9^th June at the Jubilee Green.

On the day, there is plenty going on! With street art demos, fun rides, archery and community stalls, the Bradley Stoke Festival this year will have music from local bands, dancers and even a ‘Colour Fest’ – with powder paint throwing. There will also be a football tournament with 13 of the locals schools getting involved. Watch out for the BradleyStoke FM team around and about with some special branded t-shirts!

Back for the fifth year, the South Glos Show promises to be bigger and better than ever with the Gregor Heating Main Arena open for business this year.

So what can you expect to see? There will be Russian cossack riders, performing incredible stunts and acrobatics. The Wings of Wales Falconry will be attending to wow the audience, plus all the classics; the Food Festival, music, arts and crafts and more.

Taking place on the 4^th August, Redfest is back for another year in St. Georges Park. With 3 music stages, a Wellbeing area and Kids Village, the headline act is Lack of Afro, who promise to get everyone up and dancing. Plus plenty of food and craft markets too.

The Young at Heart club has been running for the past 5 years, led by volunteers Kate Crees and Lin Rawlings. Originally there were just 20 members, but full capacity is now 130!

The club is run through fundraising from the community. So, here at Gregor Heating, we have raised money through dress-down days each month and staff cake sales; we are pleased to have donated over £150 to the Young at Heart club.

Organisers at the Young At Heart club explained that they rely on donations; 

“We are really grateful for Gregor Heating’s contribution – the money will certainly be put to good use.”

Every Thursday afternoon, at Hanham Community Centre, the Young at Heart members gather to drink tea, coffee and perhaps a glass of sherry or Baileys! There is a seasonal focus on the food, with hot cross buns the treat of the moment, having had daffodils and cream tea to celebrate Mother’s Day earlier in the month.

At Christmas, a full Christmas Dinner was provided, where lots of members explained that it would be the only Christmas Dinner they would have. It is small acts of kindness like this that bring a smile and make people feel less alone.

It’s not all about food of course; accessible trips are organised for those who’d like to attend, to cinemas and garden centers.

There is weekly entertainment too! Sometimes a singer or musician, and games too, such as bingo and countdown. Last week, a speaker from Santander attended to talk about avoiding fraud – ensuring that members feel safe and secure in their community.

Deb Miles, from the electrical team here at Gregor, was delighted to be able to present the donation to the club, as the club is close to her own heart.

“My parents really enjoy the club. Due to my dad’s health issues, he is often housebound at the moment and my mum cannot go out by herself as she is partially sighted, so the club is a great opportunity for them to go out together.

They have lived in Hanham for the past 50 years – they are very much part of the older community. Both my parents enjoy socialising with their friends and others at the club!”

We all know someone who may live alone and feel lonely from time to time, so clubs like this are a fantastic way to socialize and spend time out of the house. Here at Gregor Heating, we have been helping to keep families in and around Bristol and Bath warm and safe for over 30 years. Whether that is by heating their home with a new boiler, or installing electrical home solutions, we always have one eye on the emerging technology trends.

Recent advances have made homes smarter and safer than ever and developments in Artificial Intelligence (AI) will continue to fuel smart home technology. We have already seen how machine learning can learn and predict the desires of home owners.

Here, our electrical manager, Alex Rook, shares his top five electrical trends for 2018. 

1. Voice integration

The Christmas present of 2017 was the smart speaker, with many brands releasing their own take on it. Voice recognition isn’t new, but it will grow to become integrated into so many homes this year. Connecting your smart home assistant to your heating means that your Amazon Echo can turn on your lights or coffee machine, and your Google Home can adjust the thermostat or turn on a plug. Adjust the comfort of your home by simply speaking aloud! The popularity of these is set to grow throughout 2018.

2. Electric cars

As relative early adopters of hybrid cars ourselves, (we even have an electric car charging point at Gregor HQ) we are excited to see where the car industry goes this year.

Self-driving cars are definitely the future, but with a few years still to go, the focus is on electric cars and this year we’ll see new electric cars promising ranges of 200 miles or more!

BP predicts that the number of electric cars will rise from 1.2 million in 2015 to around 100 million by 2035! An excellent change for the future, ensuring everyone can do their bit to work towards a more sustainable future.

3. Security cameras

Research shows that consumers are investing more and more in home security cameras which have advanced to include facial recognition, to ensure the safety of their family, belongings and property.
