When people hear air-to-air heat pumps, they often think of one thing: air conditioning.
But the reality is these systems are one of the most versatile, efficient and flexible home comfort solutions available – and they work all year round.

At Gregor Renewables, we install air-to-air heat pumps in homes across Bristol and Bath, and many homeowners are surprised by just how much they can do.

What is an Air-to-Air Heat Pump?

An air-to-air heat pump transfers heat from outside air to inside your home (and vice versa). It works alongside your existing heating system, so it doesn’t matter what you already have installed – gas boiler, oil, electric or heat pump, and most houses and flats are suitable.

If a home isn’t suitable, we’ll always tell you honestly. No pressure, no upselling, just straightforward advice.

Cooling: Comfortable Homes During British Summers

We all know our summers are getting hotter, and when a heatwave hits, homes can become uncomfortable fast. Which can cause problems when working from home or sleeping at night.

Air-to-air heat pumps allow you to:

Keep key rooms cool and comfortable

Escape the worst of the heat during the day

Sleep better at night with cooler bedrooms

Keep pets safe and comfortable while you’re out at work

Got solar panels?
When paired with solar PV, running costs during high-generation periods can be very low, sometimes close to nothing.

Heating: Smart, Efficient Warmth in Colder Months

Air-to-air heat pumps aren’t just for summer, they’re incredibly useful in winter too.

Homeowners love them because they:

Heat individual rooms without firing up the whole house

Warm spaces quickly thanks to fast-reacting technology

Provide a reliable backup heat source if your central heating fails

All making them ideal for home offices, bedrooms, extensions or garden rooms.

They give you flexibility, comfort and peace of mind all year round.

And that’s not all…

Fan Mode: Fresh, Balanced Air

Sometimes you don’t need heating or cooling, just better air movement.

When you use the fan mode it:

Circulates air to keep rooms feeling fresh

Helps balance temperatures throughout the space

Improves comfort without additional energy use.

De-humidifier Mode: Quietly Solving Everyday Problems

Air-to-air heat pumps also act as powerful de-humidifiers, helping tackle common UK household issues.

Perfect if you struggle with:

Condensation on windows

Drying washing indoors during winter

Damp or mould-prone rooms

By removing excess moisture from the air, these systems help create a healthier, more comfortable home, especially during long, wet winters.

How much do they cost?

A basic single room unit starts at £1500 – depending on the style you want and the scope of the job. Running costs vary depending on what you’re using it for, but they have the same efficiency ranges as air to water heat pumps of around 300%

Honest Advice from a Local Team You Can Trust

We’re proud of the standard of our work and passionate about doing things properly. Every system we install is:

Designed correctly — never rushed or oversized

Installed by our own local, in-house engineers

Fitted neatly, with respect for your home

Fully explained, with ongoing support you can rely on

Whether you need one unit or multiple, we’ll design a system that suits your home, your budget and how you actually live in it.

Is an Air-to-Air Heat Pump Right for You?

If you’re thinking about a smarter way to heat, cool and control your home, air-to-air heat pumps are well worth considering.

At Gregor Heating & Renewables, apprenticeships aren’t just a pathway into the industry, they’re a cornerstone of how we build a skilled, confident and professional workforce for the future.

This National Apprenticeship Week, we’re proud to celebrate our apprentices and the people who support them every step of the way. One of those people is Ross Baker, our new Apprenticeship Mentor.

Supporting Apprentices Where It Matters Most

Ross joined Gregor in his new role on 1st December 2025, bringing with him over 15 years’ experience as an on-site engineer. Having spent many years working directly on projects, Ross understands the realities of life on site, and the challenges apprentices can face while learning the trade.

Gregor recognised the need for a dedicated middle point between busy engineers, the college and apprentices who sometimes need extra guidance, time or reassurance. That’s where Ross comes in.

“Sometimes apprentices need help and guidance, and engineers are busy on the job. My role is to guide them, give them extra training and support when they need it.”

Ross’s week is varied, he rotates around sites and apprentices can book time with him for one-to-one support, whether that’s preparing for an upcoming assessment, building confidence, or getting extra help with technical skills.

A Role Built on Experience, and Care

After stepping away from Gregor to pursue a career as a personal trainer, Ross was asked to return in this newly created role – which blended his experience as an engineer and a coach. The opportunity to work closely with apprentices and help shape their development was something that really appealed to him.

“It sounded rewarding — being able to work alongside apprentices and see them grow.”

That reward is evident in the variety of work Ross supports across Gregor’s apprenticeship programme.

Gregor currently has 15 apprentices spread across all four years of training, working mainly on site across new build projects, with some gaining experience in domestic settings and alongside engineers.

Ross’s role adapts to where each apprentice is in their journey.

“With first years, it might be helping them with measurements or cutting pipes for radiators. With fourth years, it’s preparing them for their gas assessments — commissioning, tightness testing, making sure they’re where they need to be before assessment.”

Blending College Learning with Real-World Experience

Gregor apprentices attend On Site College in Bristol one day a week, where their learning is supported by structured training and dedicated training officers. The rest of the week, they’re out on live jobs, always paired with an experienced engineer.

Ross works closely with both the apprentices and the college framework.

“The work we focus on is led by their college portfolio and what they need to complete, but Gregor also has its own expectations of what apprentices should achieve by the end of each year.”

Ross recently visited the On-Site College to better understand the apprentices’ learning environment and align on-site training with what’s being taught in the classroom.

Building Confidence, Community and Belonging

Technical skills are only part of the picture. Confidence and support play a huge role in an apprentice’s success.

Ross has created a WhatsApp group where apprentices can share photos of their work, ask questions, encourage each other and celebrate progress. It’s helped build a strong sense of community across the group.

Every quarter, Gregor also recognises outstanding effort by awarding an Apprentice of the Quarter, who receives £200 towards tools.

“It makes them feel part of the company. We bring everyone together for a training day, cover compliance, and then announce the winner.”

Even once apprentices qualify, Gregor doesn’t stop supporting them.

“Most stay on after the four years and go out onto site, but we still keep an eye on them.”

Watching Confidence Grow

For Ross, the most rewarding part of the role is seeing apprentices grow in confidence.

“A lot of it comes down to confidence. They know more than they think they know.”

“To know I’m a small part in helping them grow through their apprenticeship means a lot. I often receive messages thanking me for the support I gave, which always makes my day”.

Investing in the Future of Heating & Renewables

Apprenticeships are essential to the future of the heating and renewables industry. At Gregor, we’re proud to invest time, care and expertise into developing the next generation of tradespeople — not just to meet today’s demand, but to uphold high standards for years to come.

This National Apprenticeship Week, we celebrate our apprentices, our mentors like Ross, and the commitment it takes to do training properly.

Because great engineers aren’t just trained — they’re supported, encouraged and believed in.

Your boiler works hard behind the scenes to keep your home warm and your water hot, but like any appliance, it won’t last forever. A typical boiler lifespan is around 10-15 years, depending on how well it’s maintained. Knowing when it’s time to replace your boiler can save you from unexpected breakdowns, costly repairs, and inefficient energy bills.

We know that replacing a boiler is a big household expense, and not a decision anyone takes lightly. That’s why we’re here to help you understand your options and make the process as smooth as possible.

Here are five key signs your boiler may be ready for an upgrade:

Frequent Breakdowns

If you find yourself calling out an engineer more than once or twice a year, it’s a clear signal that your boiler may be nearing the end of its life. Replacing parts repeatedly can quickly add up, in many cases, a new, reliable boiler will be more cost-effective in the long run.

Rising Energy Bills

Older boilers lose efficiency over time, meaning they need to burn more fuel to produce the same amount of heat. If your energy bills are climbing and you haven’t changed your usage habits, your boiler could be the culprit. Modern A-rated boilers are far more efficient and can significantly reduce your heating costs.

Uneven Heating Around Your Home

Are some rooms too cold while others are too hot? Or does it take longer than it used to for your home to warm up? Inconsistent heating is often a sign your boiler is struggling to circulate water properly, and it might be more than a simple repair can fix.

Unusual Noises

While no boiler is completely silent, banging, clunking, or whistling sounds (sometimes called “kettling”) are usually a sign of internal issues like limescale buildup or failing components. If the noises persist even after servicing, it could be time for a replacement.

Visible Leaks or Corrosion

Water leaks, rust, or other visible signs of damage should never be ignored. Leaks can cause serious damage to your property and indicate that the internal parts of your boiler are deteriorating.

Considering Your Options: Boilers & Beyond

At Gregor Heating, we understand that a new boiler is a major investment. Our team can guide you through the process, help you choose the right model for your home, and even discuss financing options to spread the cost. In some cases, there are grants that can help make your home more energy efficient, which could include replacing boilers or introducing renewable heating solutions.

But upgrading your heating system isn’t just about swapping old for new, it’s also a great opportunity to think about the future. More and more households are switching to air source heat pumps, a highly efficient, low-carbon alternative to gas boilers.

Heat pumps work by extracting heat from the air outside (even on cold days!) and using it to warm your home. They can:

As we enjoy the last few weeks of summer, our thoughts go towards the autumn and the colder months ahead. We know that the cost of heating has been on everyone’s mind for several years now. With larger than normal price increases due to global events, and continued uncertainty, homeowners are always looking for ways to keep warm and the cost down.

Purchasing a new boiler, heat pump, solar thermal system, or solar panels with battery storage is one way of doing this. A new product offers cutting edge technology and greater efficiently, and is a big investment, one you would have spent a while considering.

It’s a big step towards a more efficient, eco-friendly, and cost-effective home. And with your new product running so smoothly from the outset, it can be tempting to let things run untouched for a few years. Afterall, you don’t want another expense!

We look at this differently, we recommend servicing from the outset – stay with us! Here’s why.

Protect Your Investment

Heating and renewable energy systems are complex, and, like any high-performance equipment, they need regular attention to keep performing at their best. Servicing helps to:

Maintain efficiency – keeping your system in top condition saves energy and lowers running costs.

Prevent breakdowns – spotting small issues early helps avoid unexpected (and expensive) failures later.

Prolong system life – regular maintenance extends the lifespan of your equipment.

Ensure safety – safety checks are vital, particularly for gas appliances, to guard against risks like carbon monoxide.

Keep warranties valid – most manufacturers require annual servicing to maintain the warranty.

How Often Should You Service Your System?

Here’s our recommended schedule:

Boilers – Annually. It’s essential for safety, efficiency, and warranty compliance, especially before winter.

Heat Pumps – Every year. Ensures your system runs efficiently in all seasons.

Solar Thermal Systems – Checked every year to maintain efficiency and prevent costly damage, with a fluid top-up/replacement every three to five years.

Solar PV & Battery Storage – A health check every 1–2 years keeps performance and safety on track.

As energy costs continue to rise and environmental concerns grow, forward thinking UK businesses are increasingly turning to renewable energy solutions to reduce expenses and enhance sustainability. One of the most effective ways to achieve this is by installing solar photovoltaic (PV) systems and energy storage solutions.

At Gregor Renewables, we’ve helped businesses transition to a more environmentally friendly energy solution resulting in not only financial savings, but energy security, and a whole host of other benefits. Read on to find out the potential benefits for your business.

Cut Energy Bills and Reduce Operational Costs

Simply put, installing solar PV panels allows businesses to generate their own electricity, significantly reducing reliance on the National Grid. This leads to lower energy bills and protection against unpredictable energy price increases. By producing your own energy, your business can enjoy long-term savings and increased financial stability. By adding in one of our solar energy storage batteries you can also capture and store excess solar energy and use it when you do need it – think a sunny weekend when you are closed!

Offset National Insurance and Business Rates Increases

With recent increases in National Insurance contributions and business rates, companies are facing higher operational costs than before, which is having a real impact, especially on small and medium sized businesses. Investing in solar PV can help offset these rising expenses by reducing your energy spend and taking advantage of government incentives. Additionally, commercial properties with renewable energy installations may benefit from business rates exemptions, further easing financial pressures.

Government Incentives and Tax Benefits

The UK government offers several financial incentives to encourage the adoption of renewable energy, making solar PV an even more attractive investment:

Smart Export Guarantee (SEG): Businesses can earn money by selling excess electricity back to the grid, creating an additional revenue stream. You can find out more about that here:

VAT Reduction: Solar PV installations benefit from a 0% VAT rate (valid until the end of March 2027), reducing initial installation costs.

Business Rates Exemption: The removal of business rates on green technologies, including solar panels, enhances the financial benefits of solar investment.

Legal and Policy Context: Moving Toward Net Zero

While there is currently no blanket legal requirement for all UK businesses to be carbon neutral, there is growing pressure from both government policy and market expectations. The UK Government has committed to reaching net zero carbon emissions by 2050, and this target influences regulatory and financial frameworks. Larger businesses are already subject to environmental reporting obligations such as the Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting (SECR) and Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS). By installing solar PV now, you are on the front foot in case policies change and are moving towards business expectations in terms of reducing your carbon footprint.

Companies that move proactively toward carbon neutrality often gain competitive advantages, particularly in supply chains, public procurement, and investor relations. Installing solar PV is a sure step businesses can take to align with national goals and stakeholder expectations.

Improve Energy Independence and Stability

If the last few years are anything to go by – global uncertainty is becoming the norm! Generating your own electricity provides greater energy security and reduces dependency on external suppliers. This protects businesses from energy price volatility and supply chain disruptions, ensuring more predictable budgeting and operational planning.

Enhance Corporate Social Responsibility and Brand Image

Switching to solar energy demonstrates a commitment to sustainability and reducing your company’s carbon footprint. Not only does this align with corporate social responsibility goals, it also strengthens your brands reputation, attracting environmentally conscious customers, investors, and partners.

Increase Property Value and Attractiveness

Installing solar PV can enhance the value of commercial properties by making them more energy-efficient and cost-effective to operate. Businesses that own their premises can benefit from increased asset value, while tenants can enjoy lower utility costs, making solar-equipped properties more attractive.

How to fund your Solar PV Project

You’ve seen the benefits of installing Solar PV, but how do you fund it? The good news is, there are many financial incentives which aim to reduce the financial barriers for businesses looking to adopt solar energy. This is a constantly changing market so it’s worth doing your research.

Barclays Green Loans for Business: Offers discounted interest rates for businesses investing in eligible green assets, such as solar panels. They also provide green commercial mortgages for energy-efficient buildings with an EPC rating of B or above.

It’s commonly known that the UK is facing a growing crisis in the availability of skilled tradespeople, with the plumbing and heating sector feeling the strain.

At Gregor Heating & Renewables, we see first-hand the increasing demand for qualified professionals and the challenges in meeting that need. This unique situation has arisen mostly because of an aging workforce and fewer young people entering the trade, which could get worse because of the lower birth rates that are happening across the UK.

As a society, it’s vital to address this shortage to ensure the stability of our infrastructure and the continued comfort of homes and businesses across the country.

A Declining Workforce and Increasing Demand

The shortage of plumbers and heating engineers isn’t a new problem, it began in the 1980s, when traditional apprenticeships decreased due to deindustrialization and policy changes. It accelerated in the 1990s and 2000s, as the focus shifted to university education. Schools started to push University Education as the only way into a well-paid and successful career. This has led to many young people (and their parents) viewing trade careers as less prestigious compared to white-collar professions. There’s also a misconception about low wages, physically demanding work, and lack of career progression which discourages entry into skilled trades.

The problem now is becoming more acute. According to industry reports, nearly a third of UK tradespeople are over 50, meaning many will retire in the next 10-15 years and without enough young people stepping in, the gap between supply and demand is widening. This is further exacerbated by the increasing focus on energy efficiency and renewables, requiring specialists trained in modern heating solutions such as heat pumps and solar PV, thermal & Battery Storage systems.

Homeowners and businesses are already feeling the effects, with longer waiting times for installations, servicing, and repairs. In an era where reliable heating and plumbing are fundamental to daily life, this skills gap poses a real risk to the UK’s infrastructure and economy.

How will AI and Technology Change the Heating & Plumbing Industry?

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and automation are transforming many industries, and the heating and plumbing sector is no exception. Smart technology is enhancing diagnostics, predictive maintenance, and system efficiencies, making it easier for engineers to deliver a high standard of service. AI-powered fault detection, for example, can identify potential issues before they become major problems, allowing tradespeople to focus their efforts where they are most needed.

However, the good news is – AI is not a replacement for skilled professionals. The intricacies of installing and maintaining heating systems require a human touch – experience, problem-solving skills, and adaptability that machines simply cannot replicate. AI can assist, but it cannot replace the expertise of a trained heating engineer. Instead, technology should be seen as an enabler, helping to make the industry more efficient while still requiring a strong pipeline of skilled workers to carry out essential hands-on tasks.

Interestingly, as AI threatens white-collar jobs in law, marketing, accounting, customer service, and even programming, we may see a new trend in career choices emerging. Many traditional office careers that were seen as stable may no longer offer long-term security. Add to that rising university fees and there’s a strong possibility that more young people will start considering learning a trade as a career choice.

Here are some of the facts behind this

University fees in England are among the highest in the world leading many young people to graduate with £40,000+ in debt.

Meanwhile, because of the shortage, skilled trades like plumbing, electrical work, and carpentry offer high earnings without the debt. An experienced, qualified electrician or heating engineer can easily earn more annually than the amount of student debt many graduates accumulate.

Trade jobs require hands-on, problem-solving skills that AI and robots struggle to replicate.

Skilled labour in construction, plumbing, electrical work, and engineering remains in high demand.

Are Perceptions of Trades Changing?

We are starting to see a cultural shift in attitudes towards trades as social media and influencers change perceptions. There’s a growing trend of young people showing off careers in carpentry, welding, and construction on platforms like TikTok and YouTube. As more young people see that skilled trades offer good pay, job security, and work-life balance, they may ditch the traditional “go to uni” mindset.

Will the Shift Happen Soon?

We’re already seeing a small increase in young people choosing apprenticeships, but university is still the dominant choice. If AI continues to disrupt office jobs and university debt keeps rising, a major shift toward trades could happen within the next 5-10 years.

What’s in the Way For Employers?

There is a growing problem. The rise in National Insurance contributions and the increasing living wage are making it more expensive for employers to take on apprentices, as the cost of wages, training, and associated contributions continue to grow. This hits many small and medium-sized businesses hard, and the problem here is, those are the very businesses who offer most of the apprenticeships – many are struggling to afford new trainees which is leading to a decline in opportunities. Without government intervention such as increased financial incentives, tax relief, or reduced employer contributions, there is a risk that fewer young people will be able to access vocational training, worsening the UK’s growing skills shortage in essential trades.

Why Skilled Trades Matter for Society

Plumbers and heating engineers are the backbone of modern infrastructure. Without them, homes would go unheated, businesses would face operational disruptions, and vital public services such as hospitals and schools would struggle to function efficiently. The push toward renewable heating solutions also means that we need more, not fewer, skilled professionals to help the UK transition to a greener future.

As a society, we must do more to encourage young people to consider a career in the trades. This includes promoting apprenticeships, increasing incentives for businesses to take on apprentices, offering better training opportunities, and improving the perception of plumbing and heating engineering as a rewarding and well-paid profession.

Building the Future Together

At Gregor Heating & Renewables, we are committed to championing the next generation of heating engineers. By embracing innovation while prioritising hands-on expertise, we can help address the skills shortage and secure a more sustainable, efficient future for the UK.

If you or someone you know is thinking about a career change and has an engineering or mechanical background, or is completely new to the trade, now is the perfect time to make the move. The demand for skilled plumbers and heating engineers has never been higher, and with the right training and support, there are fantastic opportunities to build a successful and fulfilling career and be ahead of the curve!

The heating industry is evolving, but one thing remains clear: skilled professionals will always be essential to keeping the UK running. AI and automation may enhance our work, but the human touch remains irreplaceable.

As a family business, Gregor Heating and Renewables, have always believed that our success is rooted in the strength and dedication of our team. We take the commitment of all our employees seriously and our Gregor Guarantee of delivering what we say applies equally to our employees, clients and customers. We aim to exceed expectations and add value through our five values:

PASSIONATE – We are passionate about the quality of our work and the service we provide to our customers, suppliers and each other.

PROUD – We are proud of our Company and our reputation and are committed to being the best we can.

PROFESSIONAL – We are a qualified and well trained team, always behaving in a professional manner treating everyone with courtesy, respect and consideration.

PROTECTIVE – We will protect the reputation and sustainability of our business and are accountable for every decision we make. We are trusted and reliable.

PROACTIVE – We are forward thinking. We use the very best technology, equipment and training to always be able to provide the best solution for the customer.

Furthermore, as a business that is concerned and actively working towards improving the future of our planet, we take the impact on and of the younger generations seriously.

That’s why, every September, we’re excited to share the opportunities available through our Apprenticeship Scheme, designed to equip young people with the skills and experience they need to thrive in the heating and growing renewable energy industries.

Our commitment to nurturing talent is not just about filling positions—it’s about investing in the future of our industry, community and our planet.

“Working for Gregor Heating, they’re an excellent company and they really look after you. They offer such a variety of work in different departments, and one of the main reasons I came here is because they’re one of the leaders in renewable technologies.” Ben, Current Apprentice

Why Young People Choose an Apprenticeship with Us

Hands-On Experience

Our apprenticeship program is built on the principle of learning by doing. As an apprentice, our young people work alongside experienced professionals on real projects from day one. This means they won’t just be learning from textbooks; they’ll be in the field, applying their knowledge in practical situations, helping to install heating systems, solar panels, and other renewable energy solutions. This hands-on experience is invaluable as it build confidence and competence right from the start.

Earn While You Learn

One of the standout benefits of our apprenticeship scheme is the opportunity to earn a wage whilst learning a skill and gaining qualifications. We understand the financial pressures many young people face, so we ensure our apprentices are fairly compensated as they learn. The benefits of this means young people can start building a career without the burden of student loans, setting them on a path to financial independence.

Qualifications and Training

Our apprentices receive top-quality training that is recognized throughout the industry. Working closely with accredited training providers, we offer a blend of on-the-job training and classroom learning. By the end of the apprenticeship, they’ll have industry-recognized qualifications that open doors to various career opportunities in the heating and renewable energy sectors.

Career Progression

We don’t just train apprentices; we nurture future leaders. Many of our former apprentices have gone on to hold senior positions within Gregor Heating and Gregor Renewables. We believe in promoting from within and supporting our team members’ career aspirations. With our ongoing professional development opportunities, your apprenticeship could be just the beginning of a long and fulfilling career with us.

Tom’s story: Apprentice New Build Department

“Tom chose an apprenticeship because he knew he would enjoy working hands-on. At Gregor’s, he was paired with a mentor to work with every day, to ensure Tom got the right experience to help him complete his gas qualifications. Tom explains, “I worked on a variety of different jobs, across all departments, to cover everything I needed for my gas qualification. Sometimes I went with the service engineers to complete jobs specifically for my portfolio. Over the next few years, I worked alongside several engineers on the new build side, picking up various bits of knowledge from all of them and learned the best working practices.”

The Benefits for Young People

Choosing an apprenticeship with Gregor Heating and Gregor Renewables is more than just a job – it’s the start of a rewarding career. Here’s how young people benefit:

Skill Development: Learn trade skills that are in high demand, such as plumbing, electrical work, and renewable energy installation.

Job Security: With the growing emphasis on sustainable energy, the skills you acquire are not only relevant today but will be in demand for years to come.

Networking: Build professional relationships with experienced colleagues and industry professionals, expanding your career opportunities.

Personal Growth: Develop soft skills like communication, problem-solving, and teamwork, which are essential in any professional setting.

Grant’s Story: Renewable Installation Department

Although Grant struggled in school, he enjoyed his hands-on experience of working summer holidays with his family in the construction industry. Therefore an apprenticeship was the perfect route into a career for him. At his interview with Gregor’s Operations Director nine years ago, he wasn’t sure what to expect. However, he soon found that there was plenty of support throughout his apprenticeship. When he started, he was paired with a mentor (Ross, who is one of our technical renewable experts), and began shadowing him on a variety of jobs. “Immediately Ross taught me to change the way I looked at things and opened my eyes to the renewables”.

“Where I’d only worked on traditional plumbing and bathrooms in
my previous company, once I joined Gregor’s, I got to understand the complexity of all types of heating systems with renewable technology and installing heat pumps. Renewable installations are a completely different area compared to working on new build sites. The variety of the work is great and no two systems are the same. Jobs might last one day or a week and you get to see some really interesting properties. Some of the bigger houses, like the Royal Crescent in Bath, are so impressive when they’re finished and we’re usually working alongside the construction or re-furb team, so we see each stage”.

Gregor is a friendly, family-run local business who’ve been helping families in and around Bristol, Bath, South Gloucestershire and North Somerset heat their homes and keep warm and cosy for over 35 years. Being passionate about what we do, we pride ourselves on offering a quality service and as such we choose to be associated with like-minded organisations.

In the growing and competitive industry of boilers, heating systems and renewable energies, choosing a company you can trust is so important. Purchasing a new boiler or investing in renewable technology is a significant purchase, so you’ll want to get it right first time.

It’s important to note that purchasing the product is just one part of the service, you’ll want to ensure installation is done correctly, and there is a robust after-care service and a knowledgeable and supportive customer services team in case anything goes wrong.

Doing your research is paramount and we find many consumers turn to online reviews and recommendations before making a decision. This is great but with different review sites popping up more regularly it can be misleading and you cannot always trust what you read online, or even if all the reviews are genuine. This is why we have been a Which? Trusted Trader for over 8 years. Let’s have a look at why being part of this esteemed network is so essential.

Partnering with Which? Builds Trust and Credibility

Which? is a highly respected consumer organisation in the UK, known for its rigorous testing and unbiased reviews. Which? is a not for profit organisation, which means its purpose is in solely protecting you, the consumer. The organization is also 100% independent, this means it is not biased towards or influenced by any third parties. Which? doesn’t accept freebies or money towards endorsing any products, manufacturers or retailers. It has no owners, shareholders or government departments to answer to – working entirely on behalf of you – the consumer.

Knowing this is so important because when you choose to purchase from a business such as ourselves, you can be assured that our products and services meet the highest standards of quality and service.

We’re not happy until you’re happy!

One of the cornerstones of the Which? Trusted Trader scheme is its emphasis on customer satisfaction. This aligns perfectly with our Gregor promise and guarantee ‘We’re not happy until you’re happy’ . By being part of this programme, we continue to showcase our commitment to delivering an excellent service and prioritising your needs first!

Can anyone become a Which? Trusted Trader?

There is a rigorous assessment process to becoming a Which? Trusted Trader. This ensures that only companies with a track record of meeting or exceeding customer expectations receive the endorsement. Their endorsement is about giving you peace of mind when choosing Gregor for your boiler, heating and renewable energy solutions, and we are continual assessed, to maintain our endorsement

Our joint commitment to sustainability

Another reason we love Which? is they align with our sustainability mission and values. Gregor are commitment to championing sustainability, and to being a credible and knowledgeable source of expertise and advice on sustainable choices such as Heat Pumps, Solar PV and Batteries. We’ve been driving change around Bristol and Bath by being one of the early providers and installers of renewable energy solutions (our first installation was in 2009).

Which? is committed to helping consumers reduce their environmental impact by helping them choose more sustainable products and services. The consumer champion goes beyond this and is actively influencing policymakers in government, manufacturers and retailers, as well as the finance sector, to make better decisions and choices available to help us all move towards a more sustainable future. We love and support this wholeheartedly!

Standing Out in a Competitive Market

In today’s crowded marketplace, it can sometimes feel we have too much choice. With numerous boiler and renewables companies vying for attention, being a Which? Trusted Trader sets us apart from the competition. For us it serves as a badge of excellence, giving you the confidence when choosing our services over others. In a sector where reputation and reliability matter, this distinction can make all the difference.

Trusted Reviews and Feedback

Like any business, we love receiving positive reviews as they can be an invaluable asset when consumers are doing their research. Another benefit of being a Which? Trusted Trader, is you can trust the customer feedback on their site. The Which? platform provides a trusted space for customers to share their experiences with genuine testimonials.

Becoming a Which? Trusted Trader is more than just a badge on our website; it’s a testament to our continued commitment to excellence and customer satisfaction.

In recent developments within the UK’s energy policy landscape, the Office of Gas and Electricity Markets (Ofgem) has been pivotal in orchestrating discussions on Sustainable Investment (SI) changes. One of the most significant shifts highlighted in Ofgem’s BUS (Boiler Upgrade Scheme) Forum is the transition from mandatory insulation measures to recommended ones – more specifically, they have removed the requirement for an EPC to have cavity wall and loft insulation as a requirement. Instead they have put the onus on the Installer to advise on loft and cavity wall insulation as the best course of action in order to reduce energy and running costs.

This somewhat controversial change marks a substantial policy evolution, bringing both opportunities and challenges for homeowners, policymakers, and the renewable energy sector.

The Policy Shift: From Mandatory to Recommended Insulation

Historically, the UK’s energy efficiency policies mandated specific insulation measures for residential properties. This approach ensured that homes were adequately insulated, reducing heat loss and, consequently, the energy required for heating. However, the new policy direction, as discussed in the BUS Forum, suggests a move towards recommending rather than mandating these measures.

Reasons Behind the Shift

Flexibility for Homeowners: By recommending rather than mandating insulation measures, homeowners have greater flexibility to choose solutions that best suit their individual circumstances. This approach respects the diverse nature of the UK housing stock, which varies widely in age, construction type, and current energy efficiency levels.

Encouraging Innovation: A recommendation-based approach can stimulate innovation in the energy efficiency market. Homeowners and developers might explore a broader range of insulation technologies and materials that might not have been considered under a strict regulatory framework.

Policy Alignment: This shift aligns with broader policy trends focusing on advisory and supportive measures rather than prescriptive mandates. It aims to empower individuals to make informed decisions rather than imposing blanket solutions.

Potential Implications of the Transition

Increased Costs Due to Larger Heat Pumps

One of the critical concerns raised at the BUS Forum is the potential for increased costs associated with this policy shift. The insulation of a home is crucial in minimizing heat loss. Without mandatory insulation, there is a risk that some homes may not achieve optimal insulation levels. Consequently, to maintain comfort and energy efficiency, larger and more powerful heat pumps might be required to compensate for the higher heat loss.

The Cost Dynamics

Upfront Investment: Larger heat pumps come with a higher upfront cost. For many homeowners, this could represent a significant financial burden, particularly when combined with other energy efficiency upgrades.

Operational Costs: Bigger heat pumps generally consume more electricity, leading to higher operational costs. This scenario could potentially offset the benefits gained from using renewable energy sources, such as heat pumps.

Long-term Savings: While the initial costs might be higher, properly sized heat pumps paired with adequate insulation (even if not mandatory) can result in long-term savings. The challenge lies in ensuring that homeowners understand and are willing to make this investment.

The Role of Education and Incentives

To mitigate these potential cost increases, the forum emphasized the importance of education and financial incentives:

Public Awareness Campaigns: Educating homeowners on the importance of proper insulation and the long-term financial and environmental benefits can drive voluntary compliance with recommended measures.

Incentive Programs: Financial incentives, such as grants, loans, or tax rebates, can help offset the higher initial costs of larger heat pumps and additional insulation. These programs can make energy efficiency upgrades more accessible and appealing.

Technical Support: Providing technical support and guidance to homeowners can ensure that they make informed decisions about the best insulation and heating solutions for their homes.

The transition from mandatory to recommended insulation measures marks a significant shift in the UK’s approach to energy efficiency. While this change offers greater flexibility and encourages innovation, it also presents challenges, particularly in terms of potential increased costs for homeowners in order to reach the requirements to pass their EPC.

However, with the right mix of education, incentives, and support, we believe this policy shift can still achieve its goals of improving energy efficiency, reducing carbon emissions, and ensuring comfortable living conditions for all UK residents.

The discussions at Ofgem’s BUS Forum have laid the groundwork for addressing these challenges and leveraging the opportunities presented by this new policy direction. Gregor are committed to supporting homeowners transitioning to an energy efficient home and a more sustainable energy solution. You can trust that our team will always prioritize transparency and recommend solutions that best suit your needs.

We believe that as the UK continues to strive for a sustainable future, these evolving policies and their implementations will be crucial in shaping the nation’s energy landscape and at Gregor we aim to stay ahead of the game so we can support homeowners as we have been doing so for over 30 years.

This week is Mental Health Awareness Week in the UK.

We at Gregor take this subject very seriously – we feel now more than ever, it’s crucial to talk about mental health. Our mental well-being is just as important as our physical health, yet it’s still often overlooked or dismissed.

This week serves as a reminder that it’s okay not to be okay and that seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness. Whether you’re struggling with stress, anxiety, depression, or any other mental health challenge, know that you’re not alone.

Taking care of our mental health isn’t just about addressing issues when they arise; it’s also about building resilience and building healthy habits that support our well-being every day.

The theme of this year’s week is ‘movement’, and we have just the person to talk about this.

Shaun has been our contracts manager for 13 years, he loves exercise and a challenge and has been running half marathons and taking part in triathlons for many years. In just five weeks, on 16th June he’s taking part in his first Iron Man event which he’s been training for the last 18 months.

Here’s what Shaun has to say about mental health and movement.

“Doing exercise helps with stress, mental health, everything. Whether it’s running, swimming or cycling. I’ve always done exercise – but when my kids were young I didn’t do it as often. Then I found the stress of work and parenting etc crept up on me so I got back into it again. Even when I am not training for an event I exercise – for me it’s like maintenance and a release. It’s something I do for myself, and I try to encourage everyone to do it, especially my work colleagues and kids.

Leading up to this event I do about eight training sessions a week, sometimes twice a day and I always make sure I have rest days. I love a challenge and the Iron Man is something I always wanted to do. If I can do this – I feel as though I can do anything!”

We asked Shaun the one thing he would tell anyone if they were thinking of introducing more exercise into their lives:

“Find like-minded people – don’t do it by yourself because it’s not as much fun. When you are there with people there is consistency, they encourage you, and you have accountability. If you say you’ll meet someone at 7am for a run – you have to be there and they will be there too.”

How Gregor promotes more movement during the workday

Prioritizing mental health isn’t just crucial in the workplace, but it significantly impacts overall well-being. This year, the focus on movement deeply resonated with us at Gregor, both personally and professionally. Many of our team members engage in various sports activities outside of work, whether it’s football, tennis, or hitting the gym. We frequently hear them echoing Shaun’s sentiments about the benefits of staying active.

To further promote movement during the workday, not only do we have the cycle to work scheme in place, we also introduced a table tennis setup in the office, which has been a tremendous success during lunch breaks not just for movement but for the social aspect it brings as well. Beyond our workplace, we believe in supporting the community’s access to recreational activities. Over the years, we’ve actively contributed to local sports and community clubs and will continue to promote exercise, movement and good mental health.
